Foods you can eat on a healthy detox diet

Vegetables and Fruits

All types can be included, just make sure you eat a varied selection of them each day. That way you will get a better mix of the health giving phytochemicals (beneficial plant elements).

Plan your diet so you eat a minimum of three fruits per day. Vary your fruits selections by color which will help you get a broad range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Have fruit for desserts, as nutritious and healthy snacks or mixed up and juiced or in smoothies. Dried fruit may be included in small quantities.

Try to eat three portions of veggies each day too.. All varieties of vegetables are good for detoxifying. At least one of your daily veggies should be a cruciferous vegetable (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts or watercress) as these contain glucosinolates, which help support the liver’s detoxifying enzymes, so you get a healthy liver detox diet as part of the deal.

Try to eat your vegetables fresh and raw in crispy fresh salads but if do cook them just lightly steamed to get the most nutrients from them. It’s also a good idea to juice vegetables because you can make a great tasting detox drink.

Rice, Cereals and Pasta

Eliminate wheat as much as possible and include whole grains and organic foods where possible. Quinoa, millet, brown rice, yeast free and gluten free breads, pumpernickel bread, rye crackers and rye bread, oatcakes, rice cakes and wheat-free pasta are all suitable to chose from.

There’s a lot less gluten in oats than in wheat and are acceptable as part of your detox diet but you may want to steer clear of them if you have problems with bloating or you suffer allergic reactions to gluten.

You get a lot of fiber from wholegrains, as well as most of the B vitamins and vitamin E, essential minerals like iron, magnesium, potassium, selenium and zinc, healthy carbohydrates (complex carbs) and trace amounts of essential oils. This whole range of nutritional foods, provide slow-releasing carbohydrates, which smooth out your energy supplies. Aim to include one portion of grains, bread or pasta in each meal.

Pulses, Grains and Sprouted Beans

There’s lots of healthy protein in pulses, as well as B vitamins, they’re high in fiber and also contain zinc and iron. The best way to eat them is buy them dry, then soak and cook them as per the directions on the pack. It’s handy to have a tin of pulses as back up but give them a good rinse in clean water if they’ve been tinned in salt water.

You can include any variety of lentils and bean sprouts when you’re following a detox diet. Sprouted beans are a very healthy option to add to a detox drink. They’re a great source of enzymes, protein, vitamins and minerals. You can buy them from health food stores or supermarkets. Or if you prefer you could grow your own.
