Foods you can eat on a healthy detox diet

Fruits and Veggies

All fruits and veggies can be eaten - you just need to ensure you get a wide choice of them each day. Making sure you do means you’ll supply your body with a healthier range of the health giving phytochemicals (beneficial plant substances).

Plan your diet so you eat a minimum of three fruits per day. Choose different colored fruit so you get a good balance of nutrients, vitamins and antioxidants. You can be eating fruit all day, fruit deserts are great, as healthy snacks or juiced and frozen as ice pops. Dried fruit may be included in small quantities.

The same again with vegetables - aim for three servings a day. Feel free to try every and all veggies as part of the detoxification process. At least one of your daily veggies should be a cruciferous vegetable (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, watercress or cauliflower) as these carry glucosinolates, which boost the activity of your liver’s detoxifying powers - so your body gets a much needed liver detox also.

Try to eat your vegetables fresh and raw in salads but if do cook them just lightly steamed to get the most nutrients from them. You can also use them for juicing because you can make a great tasting detox drink.

Grains, bread and pasta

Cut down on the amount of wheat you eat and go for wheat free or wholegrain alternatives. Brown rice, buckwheat, soy beans, yeast free and gluten free breads, pumpernickel bread, rye crackers and rye bread, oatcakes, rice cakes and wheat-free pasta are all desirable.

Oats contain smaller amounts of gluten than wheat and may be included but they may bloat you if you have bloating issues or you’re allergic to gluten in anyway.

Wholegrains supply a lot of fiber vitamins like the B vits and vitamin E, minerals (such as potassium, magnesium, zinc, iron and selenium), complex carbohydrate and small amounts of essential oils. These foods, along with most fruits and vegetables, provide slow-releasing carbohydrates, which fuel your body a lot longer. Make sure you have at least one serving of grains, bread or pasta in each meal.

Pulses, Grains and Sprouted Beans

Pulses provide protein as well as B vitamins, they’re high in fiber and also contain zinc and iron. For best results with pulses buy them dry, soak and heat them using the packet instructions as a guide. Tinned pulses are a useful stand-by just be sure to wash and drain them thoroughly if they’ve been stored in salty water.

You can include any variety of beans, lentils and bean sprouts when you’re following a detox diet. Sprouted beans especially are excellent on a detox diet. They’re a great source of enzymes, vitamins, minerals and vegetable protein. Sprouted beans are available from health food shops or most big supermarkets. Or if you prefer you could grow your own.
